Bible or Buzz? Helping Children Filter Truth in a Noisy World š”
#ParentingInsight #FamilyFriday
TL;DR: Not everything catchy is true. And not everything popular is wise. This week, we practiced filtering life through God's Word, seeking to recognize what truth is.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
ā Romans 12:2 (NIV)
The world says, āFollow your heart.ā The Word says, āGuard your heart.ā (Proverbs 4:23). The difference? One leads to wisdom. The other? Well, it depends on what your heart had for breakfast.
Ever heard of āItalian brainrotā? Itās just one of many bizarre internet trends that flood young minds with artificial, disorienting content. Sometimes AI-generated, sometimes just plain strange. Add that to disinformation, subliminal messages, and a childās still-developing understanding of reality, and the line between real and unreal can blur dangerously early.
If truth isn't clearly planted by age 10, it may feel foreign forever. Stay vigilant. Sow truth now. Thatās why this weekās and monthās theme matters much.
This Weekās Principle: āGodās Word is Our Filterā
Weāre helping our children learn to tell the difference between whatās wise and truth vs. whatās just catchy or common. That includes songs, sayings, slogans, and yes even those polished media clips.
We used our Wisdom Card, Table Talk Prompt, and a fun Bible vs Buzz Quiz that had the children calling out whether a phrase was from the Bible or ājust sounds wise or nice.ā You can try it with your child too; itās a great springboard for deeper conversations.
Books of the Week
Godās Very Good Idea by Trillia Newbell ā A joyful look at God's beautiful design for people.
The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones ā We picked four stories that tied to our weekly theme:
⢠āThe Terrible Lieā (The Fall ā Genesis 3)
⢠āThe Warrior Leaderā (Joshua and Jericho ā Joshua 6)
⢠āThe Tempting Snakeā (Jesus is tempted ā Luke 4)
⢠āA New Beginningā (Noahās Ark ā Genesis 6ā9)
It was a light reading week, but our youngest surprised us by reading an entire story aloud. First time volunteering. Small steps, big joys!
Parent Check-In
Hereās a quick filter to use as a family when faced with statements from songs, shows, or social chatter:
ā Does it align with Godās Word?
ā Does it glorify God or self?
ā Is it wise or just well marketed?
ā Is it true in all situations (truth) or just catchy?
ā Would Jesus nod or raise a brow?
Action Step
Try a āBible vs Buzzā challenge this weekend.
Ask your child: Is this phrase from the Bible, or is it just a popular saying?
Then talk through why it matters. Let them hear you thinking it through too. Wisdom is better caught than taught.
Next week is our final critical thinking and media wisdom focus before we take a weekās break. A new theme kicks off in August. Stay tuned!
